In Rhetoric I we learned the concept of an orator as a “good person speaking well,” reflecting Quintilian’s view of rhetoric. We learned how ethics is part and parcel of rhetoric, meaning learning to write and speak well involves forming good character. We studied various Socratic dialogues and explored the ideas of virtue and the use of Socratic method to discover wisdom and truth, and to construct persuasive dialogues on ethical and controversial subjects. The rhetorical proofs of logos, ethos and pathos are used to evaluate speeches and applied to real-life scenarios.
